Short Story Challenge for Writers
I need a short short story, prose or poem using this illustration as the subject. Yes, that is me behind the helmet and Corky Velveeta in the landscape (...or is it?). The story chosen will be written in the white space within the illustration. The black space will hold the title and author's name. I can increase the white space for the copy but don't make it too long. Creativity, brevity and impact are the key ingredients. The winning story will be published separately on May 30, 2012. Thanks everyone, and have fun!
The winner will have an asteroid in the Pinwheel Galaxy named after them!
The runners up will have half an asteroid named after them from the Howdy Doody Galaxy!
The absolute worst story (which we will never mention) will have a cubic inch of space given to them from the Garbage Dump Galaxy in sector 873!

The Incredible Answer to Arminian Connection Contest
The screenplay was written by Charles Beaumont. It was based on the novel, "The Circus of Dr. Lao" by Charles G. Finney (December 1, 1905 – April 16, 1984) an American fantasy novelist and newspaperman. His full name was Charles Grandison Finney, evidently after his great-grandfather, the evangelist Charles Grandison Finney. His first novel and most famous work, The Circus of Dr. Lao won one of the inaugural National Book Awards: the Most Original Book of 1935.

No Joke
Got up this morning at 5:30 AM to work on blog. Almost two hours later with three cups of coffee - nothing. I usually use the mornings to create new ideas and pre-schedule them (up to May 3rd so far). This is the first time in a long time that I have experienced writer's block...so, I thought I would write about having writer's block...I'm going back to bed.

Now I'm a Street Therapist
An old friend, from my days in Houston, wrote me a while back. We had done quite a few projects together. A comic strip, a radio show, a TV comedy show, a worm farming project (no joke) among other things. To my surprise, he has written a humorous novel (it's been compared to Dave Barry's work) and included me in it. Here is his letter to me:
Open the Door, Richard is my first novel & it’s available at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com & all the major internet book sites for $9.95. I have two more coming out (all are humorous fiction)—one in December & another in 2010). The first one is about me growing up in the fifties & sixties. I tell the individual stories to a series of court-appointed therapists after being convicted for road rage. Street therapist Dave Eddings (a rock ‘n roll guitarist/ex-biker and two-time ex-con), my fourth therapist, hears one too many of my life stories tries to prove that he can fly and jumps out of the window from eleven stories up. (It turns out that he can’t.) But don’t worry. If I have time before the Rapture to write a sequel, I plan to introduce Dave’s twin brother, Eddie Eddings.
I read your blog, too. How long have you been doing it & are you doing any other projects? At the moment, I’m writing either a comic strip or a cartoon book (I’ve written close to six months worth of material) called In Search of Global Warming. I was planning to use one of the artists who did my book covers ( the publisher does comic books, too), but if you’d be interested, let me know. If not, get in touch with me anyway. I’d love to hear from you.
Rick
I haven't bought a copy yet, but when I get to the states (in about 4 days) I will look for it. Hope he was kind...my life has always been based on a true story.

The Journal of Cotton Adams #22

September 23, 1739
I have been in the town of Los Ankleese for three three days now, and have found a friend in the newly appointed mayor, Virgil Hackenpoof. Have a spot of tea on his porch, our discussion zig-zagged through various subjects.
"Cotton, your shoes look a bit tattered and worn. I know someone who would gladly make you a brand new pair. I will pay for them as a service to you. You have blessed me so with your sermons. His shoes are of the finest leather and his stitching is beyond compare."
"Virgil, I humbly accept your kind offer. You are an answer to prayer. Did you know that in Florida they use alligators to make shoes...and bags!"
"It's amazing what they can get alligators to do these days!"
He stared blankly for a full nine or ten seconds, then resumed our conversation as if it he had not paused at all.
"I know a doctor here in Los Ankleese that will treat you for your muscle aches also. He is just around the corner from the church."
"Extremely kind of you."
"He is a very nice. He treated me for double-pneumonia and only charged me for one pneumonia."
Again, in an almost trance-like state, Mayor Hackenpoof is stock-still for clearly twelve seconds, then begins again.
"I have a Hebrew friend, who is an unsuccessful mystery writer."
"Why is that?"
"He always reveals the killer on the first page!"
This time, a full fifteen seconds of unblinking, motionlessness.
"...Unfortunately, my writer friend is now serving thirty days in jail."
"If you don't mind me asking, what is the charge?"
"Oh, there's no charge. Everything's free."
I was starting to realize this was going to continue throughout our discussion. I waited for what seemed a half minute and asked him,
"Who was the last traveling preacher to visit your church?"
"It was a minister by the name of Sycamore Jones. He was a very boring preacher. But, at the end of his sermons, there was always a great awakening!"
When Virgil froze this time, I took the opportunity to mount my horse and depart away. I had time to leave a note explaining my sudden exit and entreated him to see his doctor friend.

Death in the Family

My cousin, David Eddings, died of natural causes on June 2nd. He was a very prolific writer - and he wrote everything by hand. Please pray for his family.
